The week ahead offer not only a lot of great events, it also offers some BIG ones. In terms of size it doesn’t get much bigger than Taboo the naughty but nice sex show, which takes over the Vancouver Convention Centre’s east building (that’s the old one with the sails) in it’s entirety. Taboo is also big in terms of the number of participants from the local alt-sex scene—Metro Vancouver Kink, Sin City, NOIR, Club Eden, Bent Events, Erotic Vancouver Magazine (yup, that’s us!) and numerous dancers on the local burlesque scene, and no doubt some more folks we’ve forgtgotten to name.
It’s also a big week for some of the city’s local alt events, whether that be alternative in the alt-sex sense, or alternative in other ways. In the case of NOIR Fetish Ball it’s hosting their Grand Opening in their new venue.
However, in the case of Blowpony their big night is a sadder one – they’ve got their last event at The Waldorf Hotel. The hotel, which has been host to some of Vancouver’s best live shows and regular weekly and monthly nights, is under new ownership, and Waldorf Productions, which runs the bars and restaurants located in the hotel, has announced that they are packing up shop at the end of the week. It’s going to be a loss to the city if that happens, and while efforts are afoot to save the historic venue a period where it goes dark for at least some time is likely.
But not all is fetish freakiness or doom and gloom on the local event front when it comes to big: Sunday night Hot and Sexy staple Kitty Nights celebrate their 5th Anniversary. For anyone who is a fan of burlesque in this city it’s a milestone to applaud, and proof that as Erotic Vancouver Editor Reive Doig recently summed in his Huffington Post blog that where Vancouver’s alt-sex scene is concerned this isn’t “no fun city,” it’s “Oh fun city!”
Now read on to find out just how you can be a part of some of that fun.
Tuesday, January 15: Vancouver Ageplayers Munch
Where: Vancouver, Exact location available via the link below
Ageplay is perhaps the most misunderstood of kink activities. As a result those who engage in it often face prejudice, often even from within the kink community. It is because of that fact that this valuable resource, the Ageplayers Munch, has not previously appeared in this column.
Wikipedia sums up Ageplay rather succinctly. “Ageplay or age play is a form of roleplaying in which an individual acts or treats another as if they were a different age. Ageplay is role playing between adults, and involves consent from all parties. Portraying any age can be the goal of ageplay, from babies, to the elderly. Usually this involves someone pretending to be younger than they actually are, but more rarely can involve assuming an older role.“
Between adults. It’s important to recognize that ageplay is simply roleplaying, and regardless of whether that roleplay is erotic or not (for some ageplay is about recapturing a spirit of innocence, and they do not mix their ageplay and their sex) the people engaged in this activity do not sexualize actual children; they are not child molesters, pedophile or monsters.
So, now that we’ve got the difficult stuff out of the way, what is a munch, you ask? A munch is a gathering of kinky folk to discuss their interests in a casual, informal setting over something to eat. Most munches, including this one, take place in a restaurant. They are not an occasion to engage in kink play, but rather an opportunity to talk about it and possibly plan for it.
So if you’ve ever desired to play school boy or school girl, or to play with someone who did, if you feel like briefly escaping to the idyllic days of childhood while feeling protected and cared for by someone responsible, the Ageplay Munch might just be the place for you.
More details on the evening can be found here on Fetlife.
Tuesday, January 15: Le Cabaret du Passee – Vegabages & Vagabonds
Where: Guilt & Company, 1 Alexander Street, Vancouver (Downstairs)
Vancouver is home to a host of burlesque performers and great burlesque nights, and Le Cabaret Du Passee can certainly be counted amongst that number.
The third Tuesday of each month this monthly mix of burlesque and vaudeville can be found at Gastown eatery Guilt & Company. For their January show, entitled Vegababes and Vagabonds (no, Erotic Vancouver doesn’t no what a “vegabage” is either) you’ll find a fabulous local line up of some of the city’s best talent—Delilah Dare, Crystal Precious, and Miss Cherry On Top, joined by NYC burlesque sensation Amber Ray. Vaudeville duties are being taken on by contact juggler Chris Murdoch.
Doors open at 8pm, and you’ll want to get their early to get good seats, as Guilt & Company often fills up early.
To RSVP and for more details visit their Facebook event listing.
Wednesday, January 16: East Van Munch 4th Anniversary
Where: Tangent Cafe, 2095 Commercial Drive, Vancouver
“A Munch is a fun social gathering, in a casual setting, of people with an interest in BDSM/kink . There is no fetish dress up or play, it is a casual dinner with other people who have an interest in BDSM/kink. Conversation is not limited to BDSM/kink.” That’s according to the night’s event listing, and it nicely sums up the idea behind a munch in a nutshell.
How popular are these nights? Well this one is celebrating it’s fourth anniversary, so you know they’re doing something right. They also know when it’s time to make a change, and a new year brings with it a new venue: The East Van munch is staying on the Drive but moving to Tangent Cafe.
If you aren’t able to make it out this Wednesday the munch group meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month.
More details on the East Van Munch can be found here on Fetlife. [Please note: A Fetlife membership is required to view any info on the site. Membership to this social network for kinky folks is free.]
Wednesday, January 16: This Ain’t Yo Mumma’s Bingo
Where: Hyde Restaurant, 2960 Main Street, Vancouver
Come join host Villainy Loveless as he celebrates her birthday at this edition of This Ain’t Yo Mumma’s Bingo.
Indeed, this aptly name evening is a bingo night like no other. A bingo night that gives even those brave callers and attendees at Gay Bingo on Davie Street pause. You can expect to hear winning calls like “Moist,” or “Taint,” or “Porno,” rather than staid old “Bingo!”
And the evening’s fun isn’t simply limited to clever calls and wordplay—no, because thrown into the mix are Villainy’s magic balls! When one of these is drawn you can expect crazy things to happen!
Prizes, drink specials, and near naked burlesque babes. This certainly ain’t momma’s bingo indeed!
Details are available on their Facebook event listing.
Thursday, January 17 – Sunday, January 20: Taboo… the naughty but nice sex show
Where: Vancouver Trade & Convention Centre East (original) building
When: 5:00-midnight Thurs & Fri, noon-midnight Sat, noon-6pm Sun
At it’s worst the Taboo Sex Show has been nothing but a giant sex shop featuring nothing but thousands and thousands of dildos and vibrators for sale, with the occasional tired burlesque performance on a stage more icky than intimate, and those folks in the dungeon looking uncomfortable with being cast as the side show in a rather poorly designed circus…
At it’s best, well, at it’s best the show has been an epiphany, a spectacle and an education for it’s attendees. This year, in Erotic Vancouver’s opinion, is going to be all that and more!
Taboo has lined up a fabulous slate of entertainment and education for this year’s show, and Erotic Vancouver is happy to be playing a small part. Check out the Erotic Vancouver Dungeon Stage if you come down to the show. Full credit for all of the great scenes you’ll see taking place there goes to Metro Vancouver Kink, which has taken the lead in planning not only this year’s dungeon, but in filling a full slate of speakers in the Westcoast Bound Seminar Theatre.
Look for Erotic Vancouver editor Reive Doig to be presenting the following seminars:
Thursday 8:45pm – Your Guide to Erotic Vancouver
Friday 8:45 You’ve got to be kidding me?!? A guide to negotiating sexual scenes
Sunday 3:45pm Ask a Kinkster
Other new features this year include the Sin City Erotic Art Show and Sunday’s Pinup Pageant, which promises to feature some of Vancouver’s top pinup models and burlesque titles vying for the crown of Pinup Queen on Sunday afternoon. The line up is too long to even begin to list!
Details on the Pinup Pageant are here on Facebook.
This past week Vancouver was rocked by the news that the iconic Waldorf Hotel will be closing it’s doors. While there are efforts afoot to save the east side cultural hub, and the buildings landlords are vowing it will be business as usual even if they part ways with the current bar management, just in case these are the Waldorf’s final days you’re going to want to say you were there when…
And, baby, if you want a night to remember when you tell those stories, then you’re going to want to check out Blowpony!
This will be the last Queer event at the Waldorf before the doors close, and no one does a send off like this city’s gay scene!
Full details on the night can be found here on Facebook.
For folks of a certain age, and that age spans a 20+ year range, The Rocky Horror Picture Show wasn’t just a cult classic, it was a chance to go out, have a laugh, and see other folks run around in lingerie at an age where you weren’t exactly overflowing with chances to see folks of the opposite sex in lingerie. And if you were a guy looking for a chance to put on some lingerie—well, Rocky Horror was simply heaven!
Come celebrate those old times, or for those of you who are Rocky Horror virgins, come discover what the sensation was, and still is, all about.
Erotic Vancouver won’t even beging to try and describe this cult classic musical sci-fi comedy mashup. After all, you’re only half there for the show on the screen anyway! The night features a live shadow cast, and no doubt hundreds more who know the important lines not contained in the original script!
You’ll find more details on the Facebook event listing.
What can we say about Mastergeek Theatre that we haven’t said before? This is the night that took geeky and put it in a blender with humour, sexiness and a bit dollop of burlesque, hit mix, and out came one SWEET night!
This time around MGT takes solid aim at Futurama, the other creation of Simpson’s creator and front man, Matt Groening.
According to the party write up on Facebook: “There will be trivia, costume contests, and the return of the MASTERGEEK THEATRE HARDEST PARTIER PRIZE! So clean off your lower horn, make sure your fuel tanks are full of dark matter, and head down to the Cellar nightclub for our own party! With Blackjack! And Hookers! (Blackjack and Hookers not included.)”
So come check out the night that Erotic Vancouver calls “An outrageous good time that borders on the psychedelic experience of an acid trip.” Really. We just did.
Full details can be found here on Facebook.
Saturday, January 19: Eyes Wide Shut Party
Where: Club Eden, New Westminster – exact address available upon RSVP
The lower mainlands largest swingers club presents a masquerade party quite unlike any other! We can’t describe this any better than their website does, so we’ll leave it to them.
“You arrive at the event in a simple ‘theatrical mask’ and full length black robe. You can feel the electricity in the air as the valet escorts you through a private entrance. The ambience is alluring, mysterious, and somehow intriguing. Other guests drift from room to room…some in robes, some completely nude except for their masks and lingerie…you wonder who is behind them. In one corner, you see two ladies erotically caressing each other while others look on…you find your mind drifting to your personal fantasy and what it would be like to star in your own real-life version of ‘Eyes Wide Shut’…”
If that description leaves you as breathless as it does us, you can find full details on the Club Eden website.
Saturday, January 19: NOIR Fetish Ball GRAND OPENING in new venue!
Where: Chapel Arts, 304 Dunlevy Street, Vancouver
The night that has revolutionized Vancouver’s kink scene, the fetish night produced by actual kinksters, is in a new venue for 2013, and it’s one to die for!
Chapel Arts is Vancouver’s oldest venue, having begun life as a chapel, then serving as a funeral parlour for, oh, 100 years, and now finally having breathed back to life as the city’s most unique home to events!
NOIR Feitsh Ball is making use of the increased space to bring you a modified dungeon with some great new equipment, a second room of music in the upstairs lounge, and more kink and fun than you can shake a cane at!
The evenings music is being brought to you by:
dj://spaz (NOIR, Descent)
DJ Applecat (Victoria)
and NOIR is extra pleased to announce that after an extended run playing St. Paul’s ICU
Logik (NOIR frontman and resident DJ) is back in action!
This is one of those nights in kink that people will be talking about for weeks and months to come, so don’t miss out!
Please note: Because of the special events license the venue holds those attending must get on the guest list. You can do so by either clicking attending or maybe on the Facebook event listing, or you can email RSVP@noirvancouver.com with “RSVP January 19” in the subject line, and your name and the name of any guests in the body of the email.
FULL DISCLOSURE: Reive Doig, Editor of Erotic Vancouver, and writer of this column, is a partner in NOIR Fetish Ball.
Canada’s most famous and fun night of burlesque is celebrating five years of shows here in Vancouver this Sunday night.
That’s five years of the amazing antics of Kitty Nights’ frontlady Burgundy Brixx and the host with the most, The Purrrfessor. Through ups and downs, good weather and bad, and even during an extended battle to avoid deportation, this couple has resoundingly and routinely delivered a weekly night that isn’t just a bright light in Vancouver’s burlesque and entertainment scenes, but one that truly tries to kick Vancouver’s “No fun city” reputation in the ass and right out the door!
This Sunday features a line up of special performers too long to list, but check out the Facebook event listing for all the details, and then head on out to The Biltmore Caberet to see Kitty Nights celebrate in frisky feline style.
Here’s looking at another five great years!
That’s it for another week of great events here in Vancouver. As always if you know of something we’ve missed that you think should be on the list you can let us and our readers know about it in a comment below. Plus be sure to check out the Erotic Vancouver Calendar for some other great events happening around the city.
