Being publicly and openly involved in the BDSM scene means one thing in recent months: you’re going to get asked your opinion about the book 50 Shades of Grey. As I hadn’t read it yet I could only offer the opinion that any book that was garnering so much attention for BDSM, without all of that attention turning negative, was a good thing.
Really, I told myself, I should read 50 Shades of Grey. Only my brief flirtations with excerpts of it online convinced me rapidly of one thing: I really, really, didn’t want to. Learning that it had originated as Twilight fan fiction didn’t enamour me of it any more. Which is unfortunate—I’ve always been a bigger fan of written erotica and porn than I have been of filmed porn. From Penthouse Forums swiped at a young age from the porn stash of a friend’s older brother, to ones bought myself from a disreputable convenience store when I wasn’t much older, to The Story of O, which was carefully purchased at age sixteen from a Coles when the store manager was in the back, me all the while hoping the clerk at the counter wouldn’t realize the book with the picture less cover had come from the erotica section.
So how does that bring us to the subject of this post? Quite simply the Grey I’m fascinated by is not the novel 50 Shades of Grey, but that much more amazing creation, Sasha Grey. And while I haven’t seen many of her films, I’ve been an avid and fascinated reader of the many profiles and articles that have appeared about her in the media. Many of the articles focus on the fact that she is not what they stereotypically think of as “porn star material on any level. Fresh-faced and pretty with a slight, girlish figure, she seems bright, attentive and remarkably self-assured. It is the apparent disconnect between all these things and her chosen profession that has generated so much interest in her and has, in part, accelerated her rise.” That’s how an interviewer from The Telegraph put it.
So read on. While it’s not quite “50″ articles about Sasha, it’s the best selected from an even greater number. Must reads are The Teenager & The Porn Star, Sasha Grey: The Dirtiest Girl in The World and the aforementioned Sasha Grey interview for The Girlfriend Experience from The Telegraph.
